  • What did you enjoy about This I Believe?
  • To what essay(s) did you react strongly?
  • What do you think the authors of the essays accomplished through their writing?
  • What have you read that has similar or contrasting themes to the essays in This I Believe?
  • Are any of the events described in the essays relevant to your own life?
  • How did you like the juxtaposition of personal beliefs from different eras? Did you feel more strongly about one time period than the other?
  • How do you think a discussion of personal beliefs will impact the future of our community?
  • What did you know about Edward R. Murrow or This I Believe prior to reading this collection of essays? Did you learn anything new about this person? If you knew of the subject before, did anything you read change your opinion?
  • Some of the essay authors were (or are) prestigious members of society. How might history have been different without his or her contribution? How might the unknown writers – the common people – have also affected history through their beliefs and actions?
  • How has reading this book changed your opinion of a certain person or topic?
  • How has this book impacted your own personal beliefs? What do you believe?

This I Believe offers downloadable resources including a general discussion guide and educational curricula.

Book Club Kits

Kits are available to any community book club for a lending period of 5 weeks. The kit will be sent to your local public library of choice in Allegheny County.  Kits circulate for five weeks starting on the pickup date.  A kit includes 12 books, 2 books on CD and discussion resources.  Due to demand kits cannot be renewed.  [Request a kit]
